In this post, I won't linger over my obvious favorite forms of media, such as the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Hamilton, the MCU, Stranger Things, the latest in my Youtube recommended feed, and so on and so forth. That's because I talk about these a lot and everyone knows I like them. Instead, I want to focus on the quieter movies, shows, music, and books that linger in my heart.
Please note that this list won't include many books, because I read many dozens a year, and overall enjoy most of them and have way too many favorites to even begin listing books.
So now, onto my favorite medias...
Doctor Who
(specifically, NuWhu)
You're going to look at all these pictures here and you're going to ENJOY THEM and BE GRATEFUL. I know all but one are Eleven's run and that's because I love all the Doctors and companions but it's Eleven, Amy, and Rory who are the show to me; when I think about the show, there they are.
Also, Doctor Who is an obvious one really, but how could it not be here, and how could it not be first. It's not science fiction, it's a fairy tale. A lonely man traveling through space and destined to love people he will lose. The most human alien story the world has ever seen. An explosion of hope and loss and heart. Every episode makes me feel at home and at peace. Never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never, ever eat pears.
Studio Ghibli
The Oh Hellos
One of the very few things I listen to lately, The Oh Hellos write poetry and put it to music. On top of that, the albums have a plot if you listen in order. They are gorgeous and I don't just mean because of the tune. Pure talent. Not a single one I don't enjoy.
Documentaries
What, you expected a picture? They won't all have pictures. I absolutely love a people-centric documentary because basically at my core people fascinate me but exhaust me. So what better solution than a documentary where I can stare at them and get into their lives without actually interacting. Outside of many, many things on YouTube, recent ones I have enjoyed are One Child Nation, Transhood (this was partially a trainwreck), and Life in a Day parts I and II. This is also a cry to recommend documentaries to me thank you and please in advance.
The Florida Project
Maybe one of the reasons I love The Florida Project so much is because it feels like a documentary. It's really hard to believe they didn't just set up cameras around these kids and walk away. Loud, colorful, and fully embracing its surroundings, the movie depicts kids living in poverty in the shadow of Disney World, having the time of their lives as everything in the adult world crumbles. The second time I watched it made me sadder than the first, but I love a kid-centric film and it still made the list.
Room
This counts for both the book and the movie. I have read the book three times and seen the movie all the way through about that much. Room takes us inside the head of a boy who has no idea that anything outside his four walls exists and what he experiences when his tiny, square world shatters. The last lines of the books are ones I can't stop thinking about every time I read them.
I look back one more time. It's like a crater, a hole where something happened. Then we go out the door.
Squirrel Poetry
When I have a house, squirrel poetry is going to be framed on the wall. I have owned Flora & Ulysses twice but I can't keep a copy because it demands to be shared so I share it (permanently). I was going to give the movie a try, I really was, because the girl who played Flora was honestly the most adorable thing I'd ever seen in this life but then they changed the words of the squirrel poetry and butchered everything and I washed my hands of it and walked away.
Mary Oliver's poems about dogs
I overall like Mary Oliver's poems in general, but her Dog Songs were the best thing that ever happened to me. Also, she mostly owned poodles in her life.
Neil Gaiman's audiobook narration
I don't actually like audiobooks but when Neil Gaiman reads his own books you want to lie down and be still and let him just read to you.
The Great
Nimona
Nimona is really something special to make the list since not many books are on here. It deserves it. Swords and cellphones coexisting with no explanation. Young girl shows up out of nowhere and bonds herself to a sad, grumpy villain so she can get up to no good, too. I have hardly ever enjoyed anything the way I enjoyed Nimona.
Lemony Snicket's famous "I will love you" letter to Beatrice
That is all.
